Grants Available From The Charles Tenny Memorial Fund
To Vermont High School Age Students For Study In Japan

The Japan America Society of Vermont is honored to administer The Charles Tenny Memorial Fund, a small charitable fund established in 2000 by family and friends of Charles Tenny to honor the memory of Charles, a United States citizen from Barton, Vermont. Charlie enjoyed mountains, streams, forests and lakes in the US and Japan. He was born in Tokyo, lived there as a small child and went back in high school and college. In post college years he rethatched farmhouse roofs around Kyoto, and later worked in Japan as journalist. Charlie loved the Japanese language and studied archaeology as well as the traditional arts and crafts including rakugo (Japanese story telling). Throughout his life, Charlie's strength of character, love of people, and intellect stood as a shining example of how one person's efforts can make a contribution towards advancing cultural exchange and understanding between the United States and Japan. He allowed as how, of all the places he had visited, Japan and Vermont suited him best.

The Charles Tenny Memorial Fund provides supplemental travel scholarship awards to assist Vermont high school students to participate in established high school Japanese Studies programs such as those offered by 4H, AFS, Rotary International Youth Exchange Program, Youth For Understanding (YFU), or other non-profit organizations. Due to the limited size of the Fund, each individual award will not to exceed $500.00.
