March 11:  Japanese Tea Tasting and Ceremony
Dobrá, 80 Church Street, Burlington, Vermont


Dobrá Tea's supplier, master and friend, Mr. Masahiro Takadasan is visiting from Japan. He has created a new type of Japanese Tea Ceremony - Chakabuki that he would like to share with you. More information can be found at the Dobrá web site.

March 11:  Shinsai: Theaters for Japan
Middlebury College, Mahaney Center for the Arts Dance Theater,  2 – 3:30pm

An afternoon of staged readings presented by Middlebury College's Theatre Program and Potomac Theatre Project, performed on the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Japan. The title of the performance, "Shinsai," means "great quake" in Japanese. Running time: 70-80 minutes. A short reception with the artists will follow the performance

March 13: Japan One Year Out
Middlebury College Robert A. Jones Conference Room, 4:30 – 6pm

Middlebury College will be hosting a panel discussion with Q & A regarding Japan one year after the earthquake 2011. Sponsored by the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs.

March 19: Grave of the Fireflies (Film)
at Green Mountain Film Festival, Montpelier, 7 PM. 

Grave of the fireflies,  to be shown as part of the Green Mountain Film Festival, is a 1988 Japanese animated war tragedy film written and directed by Isao Takahata. This is the first film produced by Shinchosha, who hired Studio Ghibli to do the animation production work. Roger Ebert considers it to be one of the most powerful war movies ever made and, in 2000, included it on his Great Movies list. For more information, see http://www.greenmountainfilmfestival.org/

April 21: Aikido of Champlain Valley Matsuri Festival
Aikido of Champlain Valley, 257 Pine Street, Burlington Vermont

Aikido of Champlain Valley will be celebrating Matsuri festival at their dojo . This special event will include workshops and demonstrations of traditional Japanese arts (aikido, taiko, ikebana, origami, bonsai, food, etc.) More information coming soon on workshop times and schedule at their website,  http://www.aikidovt.org. 
 
March 20 – April 27, The National Cherry Blossom Festival Centennial Celebration

The National Cherry Blossom Festival will commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the gift of trees from Tokyo to Washington, DC with a five week 2012 Centennial Celebration, March 20 – April 27. Ongoing/Weekly events -

Aikido of Champlain Valley has classes every day of the week. They also offer Zazen and Iaido sessions. Please check their schedule for details.

JKA of Vermont has karate classes every Monday: 5:30 pm. Wednesday: 7:00 pm. Friday: 6:00 pm for adults at their new dojo. Students are welcome year round. Mandala Vermont has weekly practice sessions on Thursday evenings in the Burlington area. These sessions are free and newcomers are welcome. Contact Mandala Vermont by email at info@mandalavermont.org or by phone at 434-3271.

Shobu Aikido Vermont in Woodstock has Aikido classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:00pm, Thursday at 7:00pm, and Saturdays at 9:00am. Visitors and beginners are always welcome.

Vermont Aikido in Burlington holds classes Tuesday through Friday 6-7:30pm, Saturday 9:30-11am, Sunday 10am-11:30am. Monday is Kodokan Judo, class 6-7:30pm. Visitors are always welcome for practice or to observe.

The Vermont Go Club meets regularly every Wednesday night in Burlington: at Uncommon Grounds on Church Street from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. and then at Mr. Mike's from 9:00 - 11:00 P.M. or so. For more information contact Peter at schumer@middlebury.edu or at his home number 388-3934.
